POETRY, PROSE, AND POLITICS

Fiction, serious reality, and at times their interaction.

ARE HAMAS AND PALESTINIANS THE SAME PEOPLE,  AND WHAT WILL BRING PEACE BETWEEN ISRAEL AND PALESTINE?

Years ago, Israel withdrew Israeli Jewish settlements from the Gaza Strip and made Gaza independent from Israel with the opportunity for free elections. At that time the majority of Palestinian Arab Gazans voted Hamas in as their government. That was Gaza’s first and last free election. Some Gazans now realize that Hamas is not the best government for them. Others support Hamas terrorism anyway. Some people talk about the innocent Palestinians in Gaza, but I don’t know how many of the Palestinians in Gaza are Hamas, and how many are just innocent bystanders. When the Israeli hostages (including raped women) were pulled and paraded around the streets in Gaza, many of the locals cheered. I don’t know how one can separate the innocent from the guilty. How many are these, and how many are those? The distinction is not clear. However, people can change when it is in their interest to do so. It is in the interest of the Israelies as well as the Palestinians to find a solution to the problems between Israel (a multicultural nation, about 75% Jews, about 20% Israeli Arabs, and about 5% others) and the Palestinian Arabs living in the geographical land between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, in other words the Land of Israel/Palestine (as opposed to the State of Israel and the Palestinian territory or you might say the future State of Palestine). Otherwise, there will be an endless war which is not in the interest of either side. Guilty or innocent, the Palestinian Arabs as well as Israelis are there, and a solution must be found that most inhabitants can live with. The problem is complicated by radical hard-line people (often religious) on both sides who claim religious sites which to them justify immoral acts. That is true for some Moslems and some Jews. In a previous post (January 31,2024), I wrote about the idea of a confederation between 2 states, moderated by the Israeli court system which has shown itself to be reasonable and fair. Unfortunately, Netanyahu (the present Israeli Prime Minister) and his far- right colleagues at present control the Israeli Parliament and want to suppress the Israeli Court contrary to the wishes of most Israeli people. Also, Netanyahu has a personal interest in the matter. Confederation has been proposed by others in the past. Whatever form it takes, some kind of agreement must be reached between the 2 sides that allows both to live peacefully in the Land of Israel/Palestine. Such an agreement is not only the responsibility of Israel. A responsible non-terrorist government is needed on the Palestinian Arab side to stand up to Hamas and other Palestinian terrorist organizations unless Hamas itself begins to act responsibly and accepts the existence of the multicultural but predominantly Jewish State of Israel.
