POETRY, PROSE, AND POLITICS

Fiction, serious reality, and at times their interaction.

TEVYE

Tevye is the main character in the musical play, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and book by Joseph Stein, based on Sholom Aleichem’s story, TEVYE AND HIS DAUGHTERS. In the play, Tevye speaks with God and says, “I know we are supposed to be the chosen people, but next time maybe you could choose somebody else?” That sentence is meant to be funny, but it is very relevant to what is going on today to the Jewish people everywhere and particularly in Israel. It also relevant to the hatred of Israel that we are seeing today among young people at universities across the USA.
